Week 2 (so much chocolate)

Hello everyone!

This week started off with a visit of the mayor’s office after class. We got to see the inside of the town hall and were welcomed by a representative of the mayor. The students got to ask questions about Graz and talk with the representative afterwards at a small reception. The students had a lot of fun sitting in the same seats as the politicians of Graz and standing on the balcony overseeing the square. The sandwiches at the receptions were pretty good as well!

The rest of the week went smoothly with the students learning phonology and reading fairy-tales. The weather this week was a bit more rainy and cooler overall, but that was a welcome change due to the reduced AC in Europe.

On Friday we skipped school altogether and went on an adventure! We started off on a 2-hour hike through an amazingly pretty area of Styria where we got to help out an Apple-farmer sort out some bad apples and have some apple-baseball games. The apples are only going to be ripe in October, but I am sure the people who will be eating them, will appreciate the help of IUHPFL. (excuse the finger in the photo, the apple-farmer didn’t know how to handle a digital Apple product)

After a small apple-rest we continued the hike, where we saw beautiful landscapes, authentic cows, ate some cherries and got to pet a native Austrian dog! After the hike it was time to see a real fairy-tale castle, with some witches as well. Unfortunately, the hike to the castle was very short, due to its modern elevator (which was scarier than any of the witches we would see later on). In the castle we had a great guide by the name of Rudi, who not only told us about the story of the castle but also some interesting facts about the history of Styria. The tour consisted of a castle tour, which was concluded by a tour though the witch-museum.

After a lot of walking, learning and shopping souvenirs, our last stop for the day was awaiting us, and we all were very excited! The Zotter chocolate museum was truly great. It started at the waiting area, where one could show how courageous one was, by trying secret chocolates. Some of the creations included fish heads caramelized with coconut or buffalo worms with orange. And if that was too plain, one could spice things up with some dried meal worms or buffalo worms.

The rest of the tour wasn’t as experimental but no less exiting! We got to taste-test roasted cocoa beans from all over the world, different kinds of new chocolates and soooo much more! Everything was labeled, and all allergens were marked so it was safe and fun for everyone!

Hello Everybody!

Welcome everyone! We, the instructors (Tyler and Sofiya), are very exited to meet you all very soon!

Mid-week update

This week was all about studying and having fun! It seems like everyone is improving on their vocabulary, learning new fun things about linguistic and more and more about culture.  On Tuesday we went to the park and played some games and did some improv-theather. The students were having so much fun and were so good that we even had a small audience of a little girl with her mother. This week also marked a very special day for Liz, who turned 18! We got to celebrate by eating Austrian cake and singing Birthday songs in German.
